Razorbacks Land 5-Star Guard Davion Thompson After Reclassification

John Calipari adds another elite prospect as Davion Thompson accelerates his timeline to join Arkansas for the 2026-27 season.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas strengthened its already impressive recruiting haul Friday night when five-star point guard Davion Thompson announced he will reclassify from the 2027 class and enroll with the Razorbacks for the 2026-27 season. Thompson revealed his decision during the EYBL Peach Jam, giving coach John Calipari another major addition to the nation’s consensus No. 1 recruiting class.

Thompson is rated as the No. 25 overall prospect in the 2027 class and the nation’s No. 6 point guard according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

With Thompson now joining the 2026 class, Arkansas can shift its recruiting focus toward the remaining top point guards in the 2027 cycle, including Devin Cleveland and Beckham Black.

His commitment strengthens an already talented backcourt that features five-star combo guard Jordan Smith Jr., Georgia transfer Jeremiah Wilkinson, and fellow five-star freshmen JJ Andrews and Abdou Toure. Thompson’s versatility allows him to impact the game both as a primary ball handler and while playing off the ball.

Thompson’s Skill Set Fits Calipari’s System

Thompson is known for his elite handle, quick change of direction, and ability to attack defenders off the dribble. His creativity allows him to break down pressure defenses and consistently create opportunities for himself and teammates.

One of his greatest strengths is his composure in the half-court. Rather than rushing possessions, Thompson controls the pace, patiently reads defenses, and makes smart decisions with the ball—qualities that fit perfectly in Calipari’s offense.

Calipari has long valued aggressive guards who can create offense in isolation and pressure defenses by attacking the rim. Thompson embraces that style, showing confidence driving into traffic despite not possessing ideal size.

He finishes through contact exceptionally well, maintaining balance and body control around the basket, a skill that should translate effectively at the collegiate level and continue to draw NBA scouts’ attention.

Adjusting to a Crowded Backcourt

With Arkansas returning one of the nation’s deepest collections of guards, Thompson won’t be asked to carry the offense immediately. Instead, he’ll likely spend stretches playing alongside other creators, requiring him to remain productive without the ball.

Much like Meleek Thomas did last season, Thompson will need to capitalize on transition opportunities, off-ball movement, cuts, and screens while continuing to knock down perimeter shots. His reliable three-point shooting gives him the freedom to fire when open, an important trait in Calipari’s system.

Perhaps Thompson’s most valuable offensive attribute is his ability to create spacing. His shooting forces defenses to respect him beyond the arc, opening driving lanes for teammates.

Although he struggled with his shot during an event in Las Vegas earlier this month, Thompson rediscovered his rhythm at Peach Jam, connecting on 42.5% of his three-point attempts while playing for Meanstreets.

In one of his standout performances, Thompson finished with 25 points, shot 9-of-15 from the field, made five of eight three-pointers, and handed out six assists in a victory over Brad Beal Elite.

Opportunity to Develop Early

Balancing minutes among Arkansas’ talented backcourt will be one of Calipari’s biggest challenges entering the season. While Jordan Smith Jr. is expected to step into a role similar to former All-American Darius Acuff, Thompson will have the benefit of developing without the pressure of immediately carrying the offense.

His early arrival also gives him valuable experience within the program before the season begins. According to Kevin McPherson, Thompson is expected to travel with the Razorbacks to the Bahamas for the upcoming Baha Mar Summer League, giving the 17-year-old an opportunity to gain experience alongside his new teammates before his freshman campaign begins.
